Gregorio P. Alano, a businessman, and his wife, organized a group of visionaries in the municipality of Katipunan, Zamboanga Del Norte to open a rural bank that would cater to the financial needs of the municipality. On January 24, 1979, the birth of Rural Bank of Katipunan was authorized by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).

The bank opened its doors to the public on January 29, 1979. Katipunan Bank consolidated with Plaza Rural Bank of Carcar, Cebu on May 01, 2008 and was renamed to Katipunan Bank (ZN), Inc., “A Rural Bank”. On January 22, 2016, the bank was renamed to Katipunan Bank Inc. “A Rural Bank” when it consolidated with the Rural Bank of Tagoloan, Inc. Similarly, when the bank consolidated with the Rural Bank of Siocon (ZN), Inc., on December 22, 2020, it was renamed to Katipunan Banking Corporation “A Rural Bank”.

At the present time, Katipunan Banking has 19 branches and 16 microfinance banking offices across Visayas and Mindanao, with over 200,000 clients, 39,000 of whom are microfinance clients.
